The surroundings

The Noguera, where is located the house Cal Gravat, is a very extensive region, situated between the Catalan central depression and the Pre Pyrenean Mountains.

The Alta Noguera starts at the southern slope of the great mountain range of the Montsec (of Ares and of Rúbies), from which passes the Noguera Ribagorçana gorge of Mont-rebei) and the Noguera Pallaresa (passage of Terradets). The denominated Segre Mitjà includes the plateaus of the north-east, eroded by the river; and the Baja Noguera extends across the plain irrigated by the canal of Urgell.

The territory was - during Middle Ages, at the end of the Muslim control of Spain - part of the area of expansion of the county of Urgell, with the city of Balaguer as its capital.

The economy is basically agricultural (market gardening and fruit trees in the canal of Urgell and dry land in the rest) and livestock, taking advantage of the forest. The industry is little developed (hydroelectric power in the reservoirs of Camarasa, Llorenç de Montgai, Caños Santa Anna).

Nature and history share protagonism. On one hand, the Segre river has been forging, with time, a rich geologic sediment valley. From the depths of the Valley of the Segre, the escarped and steep walls of the Montsec makes us look high.

On the other hand, the historical documentation of Montsonís goes back several centuries ago. It is a region rich in archaeological remains from Iberian, Roman and medieval times. The region has many castles and fortifications that makes possible to discover the history of the "Castles of Catalonia".
